Resuming Exercise After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Woman exercising after breast augmentation Breast implants are a great option for women of all shapes and sizes to achieve more feminine curves. For those who are lean and athletic, they offer a way to restore breast volume that has been lost to physical activity. If that sounds like your situation, breast augmentation could be a great fit — just know that you’ll need to make some big changes to your workout routine during the recovery period.

Walk Early and Often

The first thing that you should do after breast augmentation is to walk around. It’s an easy way to return to physical activity that will also improve blood flow and circulation.

Be sure to get on your feet at least four times per day for about 10 minutes. Not only will walking minimize your risk of complications, but it will also help you heal faster — and get back to the gym faster.

Take Things Slow

It will be at least six weeks before you are healed enough to resume all exercises. Take things slow during that time and resist the urge to perform a core circuit or pick up your weights. Working out too soon can increase side effects and isn’t worth the risk.

After two or three weeks, most patients can gradually return to low-impact exercises. As you start to feel better, reintroduce longer walks and consider easy rides on a stationary bike. Avoid running, jumping, lifting, and other strenuous activities until you receive the all-clear during a follow-up office visit.

Wear a Supportive Bra

What you wear when you exercise matters almost as much as the type of workouts that you complete. We’re not talking about a flatteringly cut tank top or a new pair of yoga pants, but rather a supportive sports bra that fits you properly.

The right bra is essential because it will minimize the movement of your breasts and scars. It will make you more comfortable during physical activity and help you enjoy the best possible results from your surgery. Avoid ill-fitting options that can rub or chafe your healing incisions.
