What Issues Can Nose Surgery Address?

Nose surgery is designed to enhance the appearance of the nose by refining its shape or adjusting its size. It can effectively improve your nose’s overall appearance, or focus on a specific feature, such as:

  • Undesirable nose width
  • Hump in the bridge
  • Dip in the bridge
  • Large nostrils
  • Upturned or downturned tip
  • Small nose
  • Large nose
  • Bulbous tip

Dr. Perez has extensive experience performing rhinoplasty procedures. He understands the importance of achieving balanced, symmetrical and natural-looking results.

Benefits of Nose Reshaping

Your nose is a central feature of your face. If it is out of proportion with your other features, it can detract from your natural beauty. Nose surgery can help bring balance to your appearance and allow others to see your whole face instead of focusing on your nose during first impressions. Depending on your unique nasal structure, rhinoplasty can:

  • Reduce the size of your nose
  • Straighten the overall shape of the nose
  • Change the angle between the nose and the upper lip
  • Narrow the width of the nostrils
  • Refine the shape of the tip
  • Eliminate a hump on the top of the nose

Nose reshaping surgery can help correct nasal injuries and birth defects. There is no one-size-fits-all type of rhinoplasty; Dr. Perez customizes the procedure for every patient, based on a variety of factors and goals.

Is a Nose Job Right for Me?

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty may be an ideal way to achieve the elegant, natural-looking nose you desire. Typically, ideal candidates for nose surgery are patients who:

  • Are in general good health
  • Do not smoke
  • Are prepared to follow Dr. Perez’s pre and postoperative instructions
  • Have realistic expectations

Although nose surgery can be performed on patients as young as 16, it is usually best to wait until you are at least 18 or older to ensure you are emotionally and physically prepared for the surgical procedure and recuperation period.

The best way to know if a nose job is right for you is to meet personally with Dr. Perez in a confidential consultation. During this meeting, he will work to understand your goals, evaluate your candidacy, and explain all of your treatment options.

Your Nose Surgery Consultation

Your rhinoplasty consultation will begin with Dr. Perez sitting down with you to discuss your concerns and goals. Once he is clear on what you dislike about your nose and what you hope to accomplish through surgery, he will perform an examination and recommend a customized treatment plan that can best meet your needs.

It is not uncommon for patients to bring in photographs of celebrities or models to facilitate the conversation with visual examples of the types of nose they would like to have. Although it is impossible to guarantee identical results, these images can help Dr. Perez better understand your aesthetic preferences.

As with all procedures performed at Renue Aesthetic Surgery, the decision to undergo surgery is ultimately yours. Dr. Perez will serve as a guide and mentor to help you understand the procedure and set realistic expectations. You will never be pressured or rushed into making any decisions.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

The unique anatomy, goals, and approaches vary with each patient. Some patients may require a septoplasty to correct deviations of the septal cartilage. Others may need a dorsal hump reduction to correct the profile, while some patients may need a nasal bone fracture to narrow the width of the nasal bridge.

Although no two patients or surgeries are the same, most of the nose surgeries Dr. Perez performs are done under general anesthesia, meaning that the patient sleeps through the operation.

These are always performed at an accredited outpatient surgical facility in the Overland Park area, and the general anesthesia is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. In some cases, when only minimal work needs to be done, the procedure may be performed under local anesthesia, with the use of oral sedation and local anesthetic injections.

At Renue Aesthetic Surgery, we perform both primary rhinoplasty and liquid rhinoplasty patients. Dr. Perez will work with you to determine which option will be best for your needs.

Primary Rhinoplasty

A primary rhinoplasty uses a small incision across the strip of skin between your nostrils, known as the columella, which allows for maximum visibility during the procedure. Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Perez can shape the tip of your nose, graft cartilage for structural support, or trim certain areas to reduce the fullness of your nasal domes. A primary rhinoplasty is often best for patients who have more complex needs or require significant reshaping.

Liquid Rhinoplasty

Also known as a nonsurgical rhinoplasty, a liquid rhinoplasty involves altering the shape of your nose using dermal fillers. This is a minimally invasive way to bring additional volume to the area. A liquid rhinoplasty may be a good fit for patients who have isolated aesthetic improvements they wish to see on their nose.

Whether you need a simple change or a dramatic transformation, we can help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Following your rhinoplasty surgery, you will experience swelling throughout your nose and cheeks. Nasal bleeding is commonly present for approximately 24 hours after rhinoplasty. Do not blow your nose during this period. In order to keep swelling at a minimum, it is important to use ice and to keep your head elevated 30 degrees at all times. We recommend sleeping with two or three pillows or sitting in a reclining chair.

Oral narcotic pain medication is usually effective at managing any pain or discomfort. You can expect to have some facial bruising that will gradually fade from purple to yellow. Nasal stuffiness or nasal dryness is a common symptom that can be treated with the use of nasal saline solution.

Frequently, internal and external nasal splints will be in place until your first post-operative appointment. At that time, they will be removed, and nasal taping will be applied to support and stabilize the nose as it heals. Dr. Perez recommends wearing this flesh-colored tape 24 hours a day for two weeks, then 12 hours a day for another two weeks. This is done to help decrease nasal swelling.

With proper care, most of the swelling will dissipate within two to three weeks; however, expect it to take up to one year for the final swelling to be gone. Dr. Perez recommends nasal massage about two weeks after your surgery to help facilitate the healing process.

Additional FAQs About Rhinoplasty

  • Are Any Risks or Complications Associated with Rhinoplasty?

Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries some risks. Potential complications include:

    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Adverse reactions to anesthesia
    • Dissatisfaction with the cosmetic results

These issues are rare. Dr. Perez, a nationally and internationally trained plastic surgeon, takes every precaution to ensure your safety and satisfaction.

It’s also essential to follow Dr. Perez’s post-operative care instructions meticulously. This will reduce the risk of complications and speed up the healing process.

  • How Long Does the Procedure Last?

The duration of a rhinoplasty varies depending on the complexity of the surgery. On average, it lasts 1.5 to 3 hours. More complex cases, such as those that involve significant structural changes or corrective procedures from previous surgeries, may take longer.

  • Can Rhinoplasty Be Combined with Other Facial Procedures?

Yes, patients can combine rhinoplasty with other facial procedures. Commonly paired surgeries include facelifts and eyelid surgery.

Combining procedures can enhance overall facial harmony. It may also reduce overall recovery time compared to having separate surgeries. Talk to Dr. Perez during your consultation about customizing a treatment plan to address multiple concerns simultaneously.

  • When Can I See the Final Results?

Patience is crucial when awaiting the final results of your rhinoplasty. Initial swelling and bruising are common, but they can obscure the outcome.

Most rhinoplasty patients notice a substantial improvement within a few weeks. However, it can take up to a year for the swelling to entirely subside and the definitive shape of your nose to become apparent. Regular follow-up appointments at Renue Aesthetic Surgery will help you measure progress and allow you to address any concerns.

  • How Long Do the Surgery Results Last?

Rhinoplasty results are typically long-lasting. Once the initial healing phase is complete, the changes are permanent. However, it’s essential to protect the nose from injury and avoid any activities that could cause trauma. Aging and natural shifts in facial tissues over time may slightly alter the appearance of your nose. The overall improvements should remain, though.

  • Will I Have Visible Scars?

One of the most common concerns about rhinoplasty is scarring. At Renue Aesthetic Surgery, we use advanced techniques to minimize the appearance of scars.

Incisions are generally made across the columella, or the tissue between the nostrils. Scars are well-concealed and fade significantly over time.
