Laser Hair Reduction
One of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures in the United States, laser hair reduction can provide a non-invasive way to reduce unwanted hair on the face and body. At our practice, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro® Plus system to deliver precise, targeted energy to the hair follicles while protecting the surrounding skin.
Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatment sessions are typically required for optimal effects (most often between three and eight treatments). Only hairs in the active growth phase respond to the laser, which is why sessions are usually scheduled four to six weeks apart. Factors such as age, ethnicity, hormone levels, medications, and the treatment area can all influence hair thickness and color, which in turn can affect the efficacy of the treatment.
Laser energy is attracted to pigment in the hair, making individuals with darker hair and lighter skin tones generally the best candidates. Very fine or light-colored hair may be less responsive, and patients with darker skin tones may have a higher likelihood of certain side effects. Some individuals experience significant long-term reduction, while others may benefit from occasional maintenance treatments over time.
To prepare for treatment, you should shave the area the day of or the day before your appointment to reduce the risk of skin irritation. It is also important to avoid sun exposure both before and after sessions and to use appropriate moisturizers and sunscreen as directed. As with any laser procedure, side effects can include temporary skin irritation, changes in pigmentation, blistering, or burns.

During a “DOT” CO2 laser resurfacing treatment, the laser creates thousands of microscopic perforations in a targeted “DOT pattern,” forming vertical columns within the skin. These controlled micro-injuries can stimulate collagen production and skin tightening while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Because healthy skin remains between each treated area, the healing process is widely considered more efficient than traditional CO2 resurfacing methods.
Many patients notice meaningful improvement after one or two treatments, though a series of sessions spaced approximately four to six months apart may be recommended. Treatment is usually completed in less than an hour using a topical anesthetic, and in some cases a mild oral sedative may be administered for added comfort. Most patients can expect initial recovery within about three to seven days, with continued improvement as collagen rebuilds over time. Effects usually develop gradually, with visible enhancement in skin tone and texture often appearing over the course of three to five months.

As mentioned above, we employ the GentleMax Pro® Plus® for laser hair reduction. It can also effectively address age spots, freckles, and sun damage, as well as vascular concerns such as hemangiomas, benign pigmented lesions, and telangiectasias.
During a GentleMax Pro® Plus session, controlled laser energy is delivered to targeted areas of the skin to selectively treat concerns without affecting surrounding tissue. The system also features an integrated cooling mechanism (the Dynamic Cooling Device™, or DCD), to enhance comfort throughout the procedure. Sessions are typically quick and well-tolerated with little to no downtime, making this a convenient option for many patients with busy schedules.
