Easy Winter Skin Care Tips

by Stefany Perez, Licensed Esthetician

Winter is just starting and our skin is starting to notice. Thanks to cold temperatures, bitter winds, and dry indoor heat, we’re actually up against a sizable opponent during these winter months. Here are a few easy Winter skin care tips that will help so your skin doesn’t get defeated this winter season.

Hydration is key…

We might sound like a broke record but moisturizing and staying hydrated is the most important easy winter skin care tip for promoting healthy glowing winter skin. That means choosing a moisturizer that locks in moisture. Appling day and night provides protection of the dermis to encourage hydration, but still lets the skin breathe. Using a humidifier at home and drinking plenty of water also prevent flaky, itchy skin.

Don’t forget eye care…

The skin around our eye is one area that weather can have a big impact on. It can make us look healthy and refreshed or tired and rundown. In the winter we are even more likely to see dark circles appear so it’s worth taking extra care of.  These easy Winter skin care tip products contain Active ingredients like Vitamin C, peptides, retinol and caffeine are great for reducing fine lines and dark circles while moisturizing skin around the delicate eye contour.

As the temperature changes, so should your skin care…

Temperature drops can not only affect our skin but also the effectiveness of your skin care products. This could mean you need to switch from a gel facial cleanser to a more sensitive cream cleanser. Also keeping in mind that harsh exfoliations should be used a minimum of 2-3 times a week. This doesn’t mean you don’t exfoliate, it just means to change your method of exfoliation.  Another easy winter skin care tip I recommend is using a light form of exfoliation that will brighten your skin and allow your moisturizer to penetrate better.  And don’t forget that adding a serum underneath your moisturizer can really give skin a much needed hydration boost. If your skin begins to feel more sensitive than usual, it could mean your existing skin care regime may need to be altered for these dry winter months. Severe drops in the temperature can not only affect skin but also effectiveness of your current products. This might mean you need to switching from a foaming face wash to a gentler cleansing lotion come snow season. And, don’t forget that using a serum underneath your moisturizer can really give skin a boost of much-needed hydration. If skin begins to feel more sensitive than usual, then your existing routine may need to be adjusted with soothing, anti-redness, and barrier repair ingredients

NEVER neglect your sunscreen!

Remember that UV light is the number one cause of premature skin aging, making sunscreen the best anti-aging product on the market and another easy winter skin care tip. UV rays can also interfere with skin-barrier function and prevent skin from maintaining proper moisture. Choosing a sunscreen that contains Hyaluronic Acid and also fragrance-free (fragrance usually contains alcohol, which can causes dry skin) are great for dry, dehydrated and mature skin. Elta MD has Non-Tinted and Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 40 great for these less bright seasons.
